During their residency at Earthwise, composer and interdisciplinary artist-researcher Mike von der Nahmer, along with plant biochemist and molecular biologist Katarzyna Krawczyk, Ph.D., are exploring how people perceive, interpret, and respond to microbial and other living systems. Moving between scientific observation and artistic inquiry, they trace the traces, changes, uncertainties, and moments of contact without assuming that the non-human “speaks” in human terms. The briefing shares fragments from a work-in-progress and poses the question of what kinds of temporary interfaces art and science can create with worlds that remain partially inaccessible.

Mike von der Nahmer is a composer, interdisciplinary artist, and researcher who works across the fields of music, performance, film, visual media, movement, sonification, health, and ecological research. Katarzyna Krawczyk, Ph.D., is a plant biochemist and molecular biologist whose work focuses on plant stress, photosynthesis, and microalgae. Together, they combine artistic and scientific research methods to explore microbial, ecological, and non-human relationships through observation and artistic interpretation.
